"Wedding insurance" is really two different products sold under one name:
- Event liability pays if you are legally responsible for injury to someone or damage to the venue. Many venues require it.
- Cancellation/postponement reimburses non-refundable deposits and purchases if the wedding can't go ahead for a covered reason.
Whether it's worth it depends on which of the two you're talking about. Below, everything about coverage, exclusions, prices and timing comes from the public policy pages and FAQs of three US programs: WedSafe (K&K Insurance Group), Markel and Travelers' Wedding Protector Plan. We're not recommending any of them. They're used here because they publish their terms. Your actual policy wording is what counts, so read the sample policy before you buy.
The short answer
| Your situation | Liability | Cancellation |
|---|---|---|
| Venue contract requires liability cover | Required: buy it | depends on deposits |
| Large non-refundable deposits paid early | optional | worth considering |
| Wedding in hurricane season on the Gulf or Atlantic coast | optional | worth considering, bought early |
| Destination wedding abroad | check territory | check territory (see below) |
| Small wedding, mostly refundable bookings | only if venue requires | often not worth it |
| You're worried one of you might call it off | — | won't help: change of heart is excluded |
Liability: often required, and inexpensive
Markel notes that more venues now require couples to buy a one-day event liability policy. Couples can't skip it if the contract demands it. What the three programs publish:
| WedSafe | Markel | Travelers | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limits | up to $5,000,000 | up to $2 million | not stated on FAQ |
| Host liquor liability | included | available | optional add-on |
| Starting price | not published | $75 (as of Sept 2025, varies by state and options) | $165 in most states, and only together with cancellation cover |
| Deductible | none for bodily injury; $1,000 for third-party property damage | $1,000 for property damage | none |
| Venue as additional insured | yes, certificate sent to venue | yes, no additional cost | yes, no additional cost |
| Latest purchase | up to the wedding day | up to 1 day before | up to 24 hours before |
| Hours covered | set-up/breakdown 24 h before and after; rehearsal within 48 h | rehearsal dinner within 48 h; set-up and removal within 24 h | until 2 a.m. after the event date |
Practical points:
- Get the venue's exact wording first. Venues often specify limits, additional-insured wording or a waiver of subrogation. WedSafe says special wording may take up to one business day to approve.
- Don't assume your homeowners policy covers it. Markel says homeowners policies typically cover a wedding only at the couple's own home, and only for liability, not cancellation. Check your own policy if you're holding the wedding at home.
- Alcohol matters. If you serve alcohol, venues usually want host liquor liability. All three programs offer it.
- Rehearsal dinner. Both WedSafe and Markel cover a rehearsal dinner held within 48 hours of the wedding. A dinner earlier in the week may need separate cover. See our rehearsal dinner etiquette guide.
Cancellation/postponement: what's actually covered
The three programs list broadly similar covered reasons:
| Covered reason (examples from insurer pages) | WedSafe | Markel | Travelers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extreme weather (hurricane, blizzard) that stops the couple, family or most guests attending, or makes the venue unusable | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Sudden illness or injury of the couple or immediate family (not pre-existing) | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Withdrawal of military leave / unforeseen deployment | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Venue or vendor bankruptcy | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Job loss | ✓ | — | — |
| Vendor no-show | ✓ | — | ✓ |
| Lost or damaged attire, gifts, rings, photos | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Commercial transportation shutdown preventing the couple or close family from arriving | — | — | ✓ |
"—" means the reason isn't listed on the page we read, not necessarily that it's excluded. Check the sample policy.
Other details from the FAQs:
- Deposits made before you buy are covered, as long as you have receipts and didn't know of an impending claim when you bought (WedSafe, Travelers).
- Limits: WedSafe offers ten levels from $7,500 to $175,000. Travelers advises a limit at least equal to what you'd lose if you had to reschedule at the last minute; WedSafe suggests matching your total wedding budget.
- Starting prices: Markel's lowest cancellation premium is $130 (as of September 2025). Travelers says wedding insurance "starts at $160" with no deductible in most states. WedSafe doesn't publish prices on its FAQ. Markel also sells a $5,000 cancellation add-on to its liability policy for $50.
- Deductibles: $25 per category for WedSafe and Markel cancellation cover; none at Travelers.
- Purchase window: WedSafe sells cancellation cover from two years to 15 days before the wedding, Markel up to 14 days before, Travelers from two years to 24 hours before.
- Refunds: premiums are generally non-refundable once the policy is issued (WedSafe: except Montana and Texas residents; Travelers: except New Hampshire, New York and Oregon residents).
Our wedding insurance calculator helps you add up what's at stake. For cost context, The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study puts the average wedding at $34,200, most of it paid to vendors well before the day.
The exclusions that matter most
1. Change of heart. WedSafe and Travelers say so explicitly, and Markel doesn't list it among covered reasons. WedSafe: not covered and can't be added. Travelers: no coverage if either partner changes their mind. If the wedding is off because one of you called it off, cancellation insurance won't pay.
2. Ordinary bad weather. Markel says the average summer thunderstorm isn't covered. Travelers distinguishes a rainy day from a truly severe event such as a hurricane. Rain is a planning problem, not an insurance one. See our rainy day backup plan and the weather backup calculator.
3. Pre-existing medical conditions. WedSafe defines these as conditions for which care, advice or treatment was received in the 12 months before you bought the policy. Markel and Travelers also exclude pre-existing conditions.
4. Known events. A policy bought after a problem is foreseeable won't cover it. WedSafe and Travelers cover past deposits only if you "did not know" of an impending claim situation.
5. Pandemics. Travelers says COVID-19 is not covered "in any way". WedSafe's liability page excludes COVID-19 and declared pandemics or epidemics, and says cancellation cover may not be available in all states.
6. Photographer error. Markel covers lost or damaged files before you receive them, but not errors like under- or overexposure.
7. Where you live. Travelers' Wedding Protector Plan isn't available to residents of Alaska, Hawaii and Louisiana. All three say prices, options or availability vary by state.
Hurricane season: buy early, not when the forecast turns
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with a statistical peak around September 10, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. The eastern Pacific season starts on May 15. A fall wedding on the Gulf Coast, in Florida or in the Carolinas sits right in the peak.
The insurers' timing rules are the key point:
- Markel: an event cancellation policy must have been bought at least 15 days before the prediction of the threat of extreme weather.
- Travelers: extreme-weather exclusions apply if the cancellation or postponement happens less than 15 days after the policy start date.
- WedSafe and Travelers: no cover for situations you knew about when you bought.
In practice, once a storm is being forecast for your area it's too late to buy cover for it. If you're getting married between August and October in a hurricane-prone region, buy cancellation cover when you pay your first big deposits, not in the final month. Our guide to choosing a wedding date covers seasonal trade-offs.
Destination weddings
Cancellation territories are similar but not identical:
- WedSafe: US and territories and Canada; the UK, Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean (excluding Cuba) for a 10% surcharge. The insured must live in the US.
- Markel: cancellation in the US and territories, Canada, the UK, Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Caribbean (excluding Cuba). Liability only in the US, its territories and Canada.
- Travelers: US, its territories, Canada, the UK, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Caribbean (excluding Cuba and Haiti), at no extra cost.
Europe isn't on any of these lists, so check for a local policy or travel insurance. See our destination wedding planning guide.
So, is it worth it?
Work through three questions:
- Does your venue require liability cover? If yes, you're buying it anyway. Compare limits, deductibles and whether the venue's wording is accepted.
- How much is non-refundable? Read each vendor contract for deposit and cancellation terms. If you'd lose several thousand dollars from a postponement, a cancellation premium starting around $130–$160 is a small fraction of it.
- What is your realistic risk? Hurricane-season dates, a long engagement with deposits paid far in advance, elderly or unwell close relatives (subject to pre-existing exclusions), or military service all raise it. A small wedding with refundable bookings lowers it.
Insurance won't help with a change of heart, a rainy afternoon, or a storm you bought cover for after it appeared in the forecast.
FAQ
Does wedding insurance cover cold feet?
No. WedSafe and Travelers explicitly exclude a change of heart, and WedSafe says it can't be added as an option. Markel doesn't list it among covered reasons.
How much does wedding insurance cost?
The published starting points are: Markel liability from $75 and cancellation from $130 (as of September 2025); Travelers cancellation from $160 and its liability add-on from $165 in most states. Your price depends on limits, options and your state.
When should I buy wedding insurance?
When you start paying deposits. WedSafe and Travelers sell cancellation cover up to two years ahead. Extreme-weather cover has 15-day rules at Markel and Travelers, so last-minute policies won't cover a storm.
Does wedding insurance cover rain?
Not ordinary rain. Cover applies to extreme weather, such as a hurricane or blizzard, that stops the couple, close family or most guests from attending, or makes the venue unusable.
Does wedding insurance cover the rehearsal dinner?
WedSafe and Markel liability policies cover a rehearsal dinner within 48 hours of the wedding. Travelers lets you add the rehearsal dinner venue as an additional insured.
Insurance won't fix a bad contract, so check the deposit, cancellation and force majeure terms first: see wedding vendor contracts.
