About this calculator
Gift-o-Matic is a wedding gift calculator built for guests. Instead of vague advice like "give what feels right", you answer a few quick questions — your relationship to the couple, who's going, where the wedding is and how fancy it is — and get a clear amount in your local currency, a sensible range and the reasoning behind it.
The starting point is what guests in your country typically give by relationship: in the US a friend usually gives around $100 and a close friend around $150, in the UK about £60 and £100, in Ireland around €125 per single guest and €200 per couple. Couples give one joint gift of about 1.5× the solo amount, not double. From there Gift-o-Matic adjusts for big-city versus small-town weddings, a casual or luxury celebration, destination travel, money you've already spent on the shower or bachelor(ette), and your own budget.
It covers the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, with USD amounts for anywhere else. The result is a guideline, not a bill — the couple wants you there more than any gift.

FAQ
How does Gift-o-Matic work?
It takes the typical gift for your relationship in your country (one guest, mid-size city, standard wedding), multiplies it for a couple (×1.5) or a family (×1.7), then adjusts for the area (big city +20%, small town −15%), the wedding style (casual −10%, luxury +20%), destination travel (−25%), not attending (about 60%), money already spent on pre-wedding events (−15%) and your budget (tight −20%, generous +25%). Amounts are rounded to typical gift values such as $125, $150 or $175.
How much should I give for a wedding gift in 2026?
Gift-o-Matic's amounts for one guest at a standard wedding in a mid-size city:
| Relationship | US | UK | Ireland | Canada | Australia |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coworker / acquaintance | $60 | £40 | €80 | CA$75 | A$80 |
| Friend | $100 | £60 | €125 | CA$125 | A$100 |
| Close friend | $150 | £100 | €175 | CA$175 | A$200 |
| Cousin / extended family | $125 | £75 | €150 | CA$125 | A$150 |
| Aunt / uncle | $175 | £100 | €200 | CA$175 | A$200 |
| Sibling | $250 | £150 | €300 | CA$250 | A$300 |
How much should a couple give for a wedding gift?
About 1.5× what one guest would give — one joint gift, not two. A couple of friends in the US gives around $150, in the UK about £90, in Ireland around €200 and in Australia about A$150.
Why are wedding gifts higher in Ireland than in the UK?
In Ireland cash in the wedding card is the norm and 2025 polls put the most common gift at €200 per couple and €100–150 per single guest. In the UK many couples use a gift list and the typical cash gift is closer to £50–100. Gift-o-Matic uses each country's own norms instead of converting US dollars.
How much should I give if I'm not attending the wedding?
A card with a smaller gift is perfect — Gift-o-Matic suggests about 60% of the usual amount, for example around $60 from a friend in the US. You're not costing the couple a seat, but the gesture keeps the relationship warm.
Should I give less for a destination wedding?
Yes, a little. Your flights and hotel are already a significant part of the gift, so Gift-o-Matic reduces the amount by about a quarter. Many couples say "your presence is our present" for destination weddings — take them at their word if travel stretched your budget.
Do bridesmaids and groomsmen give a wedding gift too?
Yes, but the couple knows what you've already spent on the outfit, the shower and the bachelor(ette). Gift-o-Matic treats the wedding party like close friends and lets you mark money already spent, which lowers the amount by 15%.
Are the New Zealand amounts accurate?
They're estimates based on Australian norms — we couldn't find reliable New Zealand-specific surveys. Treat them as a starting point and follow local and family custom.
