What to Write in a Wedding Card – 25+ Messages for Every Guest
Wedding card messages that don't sound copied: a 4-sentence formula plus 25+ examples — classic, casual, funny, religious, from coworkers and parents, and one-liners for cash gifts.
You're standing over a blank card twenty minutes before the ceremony, and "Congrats!!" suddenly looks criminal. Here's the fix: a four-sentence formula that works for anyone, plus 25+ ready messages sorted by your relationship to the couple — copy, personalize one detail, done.
The 4-Sentence Formula
- Congratulate — name the occasion.
- Wish — one concrete wish for their marriage (not just the day).
- Personal touch — one detail only you could write: a memory, an observation, an inside reference.
- Sign off warmly — "With love," "Cheers to you both," "So happy for you."
Example built from the formula:
Congratulations, Emma and James! Wishing you a marriage full of the same easy laughter you two had on that camping trip we still talk about. Watching you together has always made the rest of us believe in the whole thing. With so much love — Rachel & Tom
Classic Messages (Safe for Any Card)

May today be the first of countless happy days together. Congratulations, and thank you for letting us be part of it.
Two wonderful people, one wonderful life ahead. We couldn't be happier for you — congratulations!
Casual — For Friends
You did it! Watching you two find each other has been the best show in town. Love you both — now go be disgustingly happy forever.
Congrats, you two! May your Wi-Fi be strong, your arguments short, and your love story long. So happy for you.
To my favorite couple: thank you for throwing the party of the year and for being proof that the good ones aren't all taken — they take each other.
Funny (Know Your Audience)
Marriage: the only war where you sleep with the enemy. Congratulations — you've both already won.
May "we should host Thanksgiving" be the biggest mistake either of you ever makes. Congrats!
Here's to love, laughter, and pretending you don't have a favorite side of the bed yet. Congratulations!
Congratulations on finding someone whose weirdness is compatible with your weirdness.
Religious
May God bless your marriage with faith, patience, and abiding love. Congratulations on this sacred day.
"Two are better than one… a cord of three strands is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:9–12) — Praying your marriage is woven with exactly that strength. Congratulations!
Wishing you a home filled with grace and a marriage guided by love. God bless you both today and always.
From a Coworker
Congratulations! Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness — and a honeymoon long enough that you forget all your passwords. Enjoy every minute.
So glad I got to celebrate this with you. Wishing you and your new spouse every happiness. Congratulations!
From Parents or Grandparents

A long and happy marriage isn't built in a day — it's built every day. You two have everything it takes. With all our love and pride.
Short One-Liners (When the Card Is Small)
So much love to you both — congratulations!
Here's to your forever. Cheers!
Best. Wedding. Ever. So happy for you two!
Wishing you a lifetime of this exact happiness.
Love wins again — congratulations!
Adding a Line About a Cash Gift
Giving money? One sentence makes it personal instead of transactional:
A little something toward the honeymoon — spend it on the trip, not the dishwasher.
For your next adventure, whatever you two choose it to be.

What NOT to Write
- Marriage advice when you're single or newly divorced — even as a joke, it reads oddly at the reception table.
- Anything about babies. "Can't wait for the next announcement!" is not your announcement to fish for.
- References to exes, past relationships, or "finally." "Finally!" implies a countdown nobody asked you to run.
- A bare signature under the printed text. The card company congratulated them; you just signed as a witness. Add one sentence of your own — the formula above takes 60 seconds.
FAQ
Do I address one person or both?
Both, always — even if you've never met one of them: "Congratulations, Sarah and Alex." If you genuinely only know one, your personal-touch sentence can be about them, but the wishes go to the couple.
What do I write if I barely know the couple?
Formula minus the personal touch: congratulate, one sincere wish, warm sign-off. Three sentences beats a hollow paragraph.
Do I need a card if I'm giving cash?
Yes — cash without a card is a transaction. Any card plus two sentences turns it into a gift. Most venues have a card box at the reception.
Should I mention the wedding itself?
If you write the card after the ceremony, one line about the day lands beautifully: "The vows destroyed us all — what a wedding."
Bottom Line
Congratulate, wish, one personal detail, warm sign-off — four sentences, sixty seconds. Match the tone to your relationship, skip babies and "finally," and if there's cash inside, give it one line of purpose.
